As the name implies, marriage certificate contains information about the marriage. One would know when and where the couple got married. The complete maiden name of the bride and the name of the groom are indicated on the record along with their birth details, address and work information. Additional information that can be obtained from the document includes the names of the parents, witnesses and the official who married the couple.

The state of New York has kept marriage records since 1880. A processing fee of $30 has to be paid in order to proceed with the search. Genealogy copies are only available if the record has reached 50 years since its registration and the couple is known to be both deceased. Before requesting the document, all of the necessary information has to be ready to avoid problems during the search. It is important to provide the basic details of the record that is being requested such as the complete names of the bride and the groom as well as the date and the place of marriage. One will also be requested to provide their personal details since it will be used as reference when doing the search. The document is only released if the one who requested it is the person himself or the immediate family of the couple.

The office of the Vital Records Section is where the marriage certificates of New York are being archived. However, the records of Albany, Yonkers and Buffalo between 1880 and 1907 are not archived by the state office. It has to be requested at the office of the county clerk where the marriage was originally registered. The county office can issue a copy of a marriage certificate regardless of the year. If getting the document is difficult at any offices, one can try to request it online.

The Internet allows the retrieval of marriage records in New York in a fast and convenient way. One can even get a copy of a public marriage records free of any charges if you only know where to look. Some websites let their customers try their system before charging them.
